Beretta 1301 tactical review: a true combat shotgun

Bottom Line

In an age when departments are moving or have already moved to the patrol rifle, some might wonder if the shotgun will continue to have a place in law enforcement armories. I firmly believe it has a place, and it will continue to serve for many decades to come.  When departments are being scrutinized for perceived militarization, the traditional lines of a shotgun can be more palatable to the public while still providing devastating effectiveness.

Beretta has a real winner with the 1301 Tactical. This shotgun is a solid performer and appears to offer exceptional performance for patrol and tactical duties. As it ships, it is ready to hit the street. Upgrading to a 1x optic like the Trijicon MRO is easy, as is routine maintenance.

Without any hesitation, I recommend this shotgun for any department and individual officers looking to upgrade their shotguns. Anyone looking for a top quality home defense scattergun should take a look at these as well.

Pro-версия ружья 1301 Comp

Оригинальная модель Beretta 1301 Competition появилась на рынке в 2014 году. Она изначально создавалась как спортивная версия полуавтоматического гладкоствольного ружья 1301. И вот, через 5 лет итальянцы выпускают обновленную модификацию своего дробовика для практической стрельбы, доработанную с учетом пожеланий самих спортсменов.

В первую очередь обращает на себя внимание новая форма ложи. Дробовик выпускается с синтетическим прикладом Kick-Off Plus с уникальной системой B-Steady, которая за счет встроенных пружин и эластомерных вставок позволяет снизить отдачу на 40%

По крайней мере, так заявляют производители.

Гребень приклада и рукоять оснащены мягкими резиновыми накладками, которые улучшают сцепление и делают обращение с оружием комфортнее для стрелка. Но в этой модели оружейники «Беретты» не ограничились обновлением дизайна и эргономичности — серьезный упор сделан и на скорострельность. Новый затвор B-Link и газоотводная полуавтоматическая система обеспечивают скорострельность на 36% выше, чем у любых аналогов. Разработчики уверяют, что ружье способно делать 4 выстрела в секунду. Из других изменений: расширенное окно зарядки и увеличенная кнопка затворной задержки — все нацелено на то, чтобы упростить и увеличить скорость перезарядки.

Most weapons promise a lot on paper but fail to deliver the same quality promised when on the field. It is because of this reason that I decided to take my Beretta 1301 tactical to the field for a hands-on test. With me, I carried two sets of rounds; Remington and Hornady. It is essential to try out different loads as one may perform better than the other.

With the Remington Loads

My target positioning was 15 yards away, and my expectations for this shotgun were high. This exercise was the first test on this gun, and the loads were 1 1/8 ounces from Remington. The results, as expected, were pleasing, and with only five shots, I demolished the ten-inch target.

This outcome was more than what I was expecting, as all my shots flew directly in the target. Moreover, the pattern left was uniform, with all prints attaining a fist-sized grouping. I did not encounter any difficulties with the loads, and my shooting experience was as smooth as it can get.

With Hornady Loads

Hornady rounds are among my favorite brands, and it would be a shame if they did not perfectly pair with this spectacular gun. They did not disappoint as the results were nothing short of amazing. With these loads, I took ten shots, which gave me an impressive three-inch pattern. The most distant shots were four inches apart.

General Analysis of Both Tests

On both exercises, I decided to use the standard ghost ring and blade sight for aiming at my targets. I did not have enough time to prepare for an additional sight accessory. Nevertheless, my results were still promising. It proved that even this typical setting is ideal and offers a fast and accurate target acquisition.

Both these sights are fully adjustable for windage and elevation. Before beginning my tests, I took a couple of practice shots to help me calibrate them to my preference. I must say that they are the easiest and quickest pair I have ever had the opportunity to zero in.

In terms of loading the Beretta 1301 tactical, I had a pleasant experience. This smooth operation was thanks to the wide feeding port that allows for easy sliding of shells into the interior magazine. Unloading of the shots is as easy as loading them as all you have to do is to lift the shell carrier located underneath the gun. On pressing the back half of the bolt release button, the rounds will practically fly out of the weapon and into your waiting hand.

The Trigger

The Beretta 1301 adjustable trigger broke cleanly with every shot I took at the standard five pounds that are factory set. The momentum created by the smooth action of the gun made me make continuous successful shots, all hitting my target. Accuracy is not a concern as the trigger is soft enough not to interfere with your aim. For shooters who prefer a heavier trigger pull, do not be shy to try this gun out. 

I had no complications regarding the triangular safety located in front of the trigger housing. It is massive and textured in a way that you cannot miss it. Its location also plays an essential role in the smooth action cycle as you can easily reach it without moving your finger too far away from the trigger.

1301 Comp Pro

Langdon Tactical LTT 1301

On the Range

An old gun maxim suggests that the true value of a gun can only be measured on the range. So, to gauge the value of the 1301 Tactical, time spent shooting was both necessary and pleasurable.

Before hitting the range, one of my concerns about the 1301 Tactical was the amount of felt recoil. The gun is so light and agile, that I was worried that the recoil might be a bit abusive.

While regular shotgun shooters are not likely to be bothered by a little more recoil, minimally trained police officers likely would be. Far too many agencies provide less training with the shotgun than they do with other firearms. So, officers that arenâ€t shooters in their off time are less likely to pull out a heavy recoiling gun when the situation dictates its use.

Iâ€m pleased to say that the recoil from this Beretta shotgun was no greater than any of the pump action shotguns I was equipped with in my law enforcement career. I ran a variety of slug and buckshot loads through the Beretta and none of them seemed any harsher than the shotguns in my personal safe.

Sometimes reliability is an issue with a semi-automatic shotgun. Not so with the Beretta. I ran a variety of loads including both full- and reduced-power slug and buckshot through the gun with only one hiccup. The third round fired – a reduced-recoil slug from Federal – failed to eject completely. The next 247 rounds fired without a single problem.

Early stoppages are possible with any gun during the break-in process. The fact that more than 200 rounds followed without a single problem tells me that this was an isolated incident and not a problem with the gun.

The ghost ring sights worked exceptionally well. The ring is wide enough to allow the eye to quickly focus on the front post. Although the sights are adjustable, they arrived spot-on.

As expected, the controls were very easy to reach and work. The oversized safety and charging handle performed admirably, and were much nicer than what Iâ€ve experienced on a number of other shotguns.

I am right-handed, but I ran the 1301 Tactical from both shoulders to see if there would be any obvious problems for left-handed shooters. I found none. In fact, I found that although the controls were ostensibly set up for right-handed shooters, I could actually run the gun faster from my left shoulder.

One of the very nice features of this gun is the trigger pull. The pull is smooth and light with a clean break. Any shotgun would be well served with this trigger pull, but for a service shotgun, it is exceptionally nice. The trigger itself is chrome-plated and black with a silky smooth surface that allows the finger to get a good feel of it.

At 25 yards, the buckshot patterns and slug groups were significantly smaller than any qualification course would require. At 50 yards, the slug groupings opened up some, but were still well within a chest sized area.

With a moderate amount of practice, patrol officers should be able to hit man-sized targets in the 50-100 yard range with slugs. For agencies where patrol rifles are not an option, the Beretta will be able to extend the effectiveness for a police officer beyond typical handgun ranges.

1301 Tactical Marine

Here we find another great product from Beretta and is an addition to the 1301 tactical series. This particular model features several necessary improvements that were inspired by the feedback received from the marketplace. It comes in a black setting and includes a corrosion-resistant finishing and aqua-tech coatings, making it perfect for maritime environments.

A great addition to the Beretta 1301 tactical marine is the re-designed bolt release lever that provides a better functioning. This mechanism is also responsible for the complete elimination of any chance of double feeding the chamber, which is what results in malfunctions in the previous models.

It also includes an aluminum Picatinny rail to support heavier optics that you might attach to your weapon. You will achieve maximum performance as this shotgun is compatible with optima core HP chokes made for 12 gauge guns.

Without a doubt, the marine proves to be the most superior model in the 1301 series.

Beretta 1301 Tactical Gen 1 vs. Gen 2

Both of these shotguns are from Beretta and feature almost similar components. However, one is an upgraded version of the other. The Beretta 1301 gen 1 was first to be released into the market, and it is no lie that it gained a massive following immediately on its release. 

After a few weeks of its release into the market, its users brought forth claims of the weapon jamming frequently. The complications were regarding the carrier release featured in the gun. If you inadvertently bumped the rear, the system would release a shell from its magazine onto the carrier. Complications arose if there was a shell already in the carrier, as the two would come into contact resulting in a jam.

Considering this issue, the Beretta team then came up with a generation 2 of the same shotgun, this time having solved the malfunction.  The gen 2 featured a re-designed bolt release that offered a smoother and complication-free release.

Immediately the team introduced the second-gen into the market; its prior model dropped in pricing to help clear it off the shelves. I would like to believe that by now, the Gen 1 model is out of stock in the current market.
